We Analyzed 451 Deals: What Actually Closes in NYC IT Services

451 opportunities from NextGen's own CRM, dated January 2023 through June 2026. Each record analyzed for source, industry vertical, engagement type, contract value at signature, and close outcome. This report reads how internal deal-desk memos read — counts, medians, tables, no narrative dressing.

Where deals actually come from

The single largest source, by count and by dollar volume, is human. Referrals plus offline networking account for 65% of closed deals and 72% of contract value. Outbound sequences produce the smallest deals; paid channels barely register at this scale.

What this means if you're evaluating vendors

Four takeaways a buyer can act on this week, independent of whether the eventual vendor is NextGen or someone else.

  • Ask any vendor how much of their business is referral. If the answer is under 30%, the underlying delivery quality is probably weaker than the pitch. Referrals are the truest external audit signal in this segment — 41% for our book is roughly the range of the strongest shops we lose deals to.
  • Benchmark the proposal against your vertical, not against "the market." A $95K SOW is above-average for SaaS and PropTech buyers and below-average for financial services buyers. Vendors quote by vertical intentionally; buyers should read by vertical too.
  • Discount cold outbound proposals harder. The average outbound-sourced deal in our data is 44% smaller than the average referral deal, and the win rate is ~2× lower. That is not a coincidence — cold outbound skews toward vendors whose warm-network engine is not producing. Not disqualifying, but priced-in risk.
  • Ask for two references from the same vertical, closed in the last 12 months. Not two references total, not two from any period. That request alone eliminates a meaningful share of vendors — the ones you probably did not want anyway.

Frequently asked questions

What's in the dataset and how was it assembled?
451 opportunities from NextGen's CRM, closed-won or closed-lost, dated between January 2023 and June 2026. Each record includes source, primary vertical, engagement type (staff augmentation, full-stack build, AI consulting, digital transformation), contract value at signature, and close/lose outcome. Records with incomplete source or value fields were dropped before analysis (n=27 excluded, leaving the 451 reported). No forecasted pipeline, no verbal commitments — signed contracts and formal declines only.
How is deal size defined?
Total contract value at signature, in USD, before any change orders or expansion. For staff-augmentation engagements it is the committed monthly rate × committed months; for fixed-price builds it is the SOW total. Retainer renewals count as separate deals only when the client signed a new master agreement or added a new engagement scope, not for auto-renewals of an existing contract. Change orders and expansion are tracked separately and not included in the numbers on this page.
Is a 451-deal sample representative of the NYC IT services market?
It is representative of NextGen's segment of the market — mid-market NYC financial services (hedge funds, RIAs, wealth managers, fintechs), professional services (law, accounting, consulting), and the technology functions inside them. It is not representative of consumer app work, offshore-first shops, Big 4 advisory, or the bulge-bracket bank in-sourcing market. Treat the numbers as a directional benchmark for a specific segment, not a citywide index.
How do I get a custom estimate for our project?
The most useful comparable is deal size by vertical and engagement type. A 30-minute call is enough to place a project into the right cell of the table — we will share the median and interquartile range for that cell, along with the two nearest anonymized deals by scope. No proposal until you ask for one.
