Seniority

Single largest driver. A junior engineer (2–4 years) and a senior engineer (8+ years, prior tech-lead experience) can differ by 60–80% on hourly rate. The right seniority is often not the most senior — for well-defined feature work, mid-level engineers ship more per dollar.

Specialization

AI/ML engineers, compliance-experienced backend engineers (SEC 17a-4, HIPAA, PCI), and specialists in scarce systems (Kafka, Snowflake internals, legacy .NET modernization) run 15–30% above the general rate for the same seniority. Real specialization, not resume keywords.

Engagement length and consistency

3-month engagements price at rate card. 6–12 month commitments earn a 3–8% reduction because our recruiting and bench cost amortizes better. Multi-engineer, multi-quarter engagements get another 3–5%. Real discounts are earned on duration, not negotiation posture.

Onshore vs offshore

The sticker gap is real. Senior engineers in onshore NYC run $155–$225/hr. Reputable nearshore providers in Latin America and Eastern Europe land $65–$110/hr for equivalent seniority. Tier-one offshore shops in India and SE Asia run $30–$65/hr. Tier-two commodity offshore runs $18–$40/hr.

The sticker gap narrows once other costs are counted honestly. Add client-side management overhead for a 9–12 hour time-zone gap (roughly $15–$25/hr equivalent in senior-manager time spent on clarification cycles), an extra QA pass on offshore-delivered code, and higher turnover replacement cost. Effective gap on a well-run offshore engagement lands around 1.3–2x rather than the 3–5x sticker gap. Poorly-run offshore engagements erase the gap entirely or run negative. Anyone quoting "same quality, one-fifth the price" is selling, not describing reality.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum engagement length?
Three months practical minimum. Shorter engagements exist but ramp-up cost isn't recovered before ramp-down, so pricing per hour ends up higher and both sides get less value. After the initial three-month commitment, contracts run month-to-month with a two-week notice period either way. No annual minimum, no long-term lock-in, no penalty for reducing headcount when the project ships.
Are rates negotiable at volume?
Yes, but modestly and honestly. A single engineer for six months runs at rate card. Three or more engineers on a shared engagement gets roughly 5–10% off the per-hour rate in exchange for the client absorbing more coordination. Twelve-month prepaid commitments get another 3–5%. We don't offer 30–40% volume discounts — anyone offering that is either padding the rate card or planning to substitute cheaper engineers than the ones you interviewed. Best real discount lever is engagement length and consistency, not headcount.
What's included in the hourly rate?
Fully-loaded W-2 engineer compensation (salary, payroll taxes, benefits, 401(k) match, health insurance), equipment (laptop, monitor, licensed IDE and dev tools), general liability and professional-liability insurance, US-jurisdiction contract and IP assignment, delivery-lead oversight, and swap-out warranty if the fit is wrong. Not included: cloud infrastructure the engineer uses on your account (that's on your bill), third-party SaaS licenses your team uses, and travel above one round-trip per quarter (billed at actual cost with no markup).
How does billing work?
Time-and-materials, invoiced monthly on the first business day for the prior month's hours. Timesheets are visible to the client in real time — either via our portal or exported into your tooling (Jira, Harvest, Tempo). Net-30 payment terms. First month is prorated from the actual start date, not backdated. No retainers, no upfront deposits for standard staff aug. How do these rates compare to hiring in-house?
A senior engineer at $180K base in NYC costs roughly $250–$265K/year fully loaded (payroll taxes, benefits, allocated recruiting, management overhead) — about $120–$130/hr at 2,000 productive hours. A senior staff-aug engineer at $175/hr for the same 2,000 hours: ~$350K/year.
