A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a senior software engineer who embeds with a customer's team, learns their systems and users, and ships working software into production in that environment. The role was popularized by Palantir and is now common at AI companies, because getting AI from demo to daily use takes an engineer who sits close to the problem.
What a forward deployed engineer actually does
- Discovery with users — Sits with operators and stakeholders — on-site when it helps — to find what should really be built.
- Builds in your environment — Writes, tests, and deploys code inside your stack, data, and security controls.
- Owns the outcome — Stays through launch and adoption instead of handing over a spec or prototype.

No. Solutions engineers usually support sales before a deal. FDEs are delivery engineers who build and ship in production after work begins.
Do forward deployed engineers work on-site?
Often, for kickoff, user discovery, and critical rollouts. The rest of the work is usually remote on the client's hours.
