Going into 2027, a US senior software engineer costs roughly $250K–$280K a year fully loaded, senior nearshore (Latin America) partners bill about $60–$75 an hour, and senior offshore (Asia) partners about $31–$41 an hour. After rework, overlap loss and management time, the real cost gap per shipped outcome is about 1.6x — not the 4–6x a rate card implies. This edition rebuilds the 2026 index on the newest public data available at publication. Where a figure is our own engagement data rather than a public source, we say so.
What changed since the 2026 edition
- Nearshore rates fell — Latin American partner rates dropped about 7.1% year over year in 2025 — the sharpest decline of any outsourcing region, per Accelerance's global survey. Senior LatAm and senior Eastern European rates now sit close together.
- US wages kept climbing — The BLS median for US software developers reached $133,080 (May 2024), with the top 10% above $211,450. Senior engineers in major metros sit well above the national median.
- AI moved the bottleneck — Code is faster to produce, so review, testing and release discipline now decide cost per shipped feature more than hourly rate. That widens the gap between strong and weak teams in every model.
Fully loaded cost per senior engineer, 2027
Onshore fully loaded cost applies a 1.35–1.45x multiplier to base salary for payroll taxes, benefits, equipment, software and recruiting. Partner rates are annualized at about 2,080 billable hours. Partner rates are what firms charge, not what engineers earn.
| Model | Headline rate | Fully loaded annual cost | Real-time overlap with US teams |
|---|---|---|---|
| US onshore W-2 hire | $185K–$210K base | $250K–$280K | 8 hours |
| Nearshore partner (LatAm) | $60–$75/hr | $125K–$155K | 5–7 hours |
| Offshore partner (Asia) | $31–$41/hr | $65K–$85K | 1–3 hours |
Effective cost per shipped outcome
Offshore still wins on pure cost, and that is worth saying plainly. What the multiplier doesn't show is variance: offshore programs have a much wider spread between best and worst outcomes, and a failed delivery on a revenue-critical system costs more than years of savings. It is a risk decision, not just arithmetic.
| Model | Rework rate | Management overhead | Effective cost multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|
| US onshore | 6–10% | 0.05 FTE per engineer | 1.0x (baseline) |
| Nearshore (LatAm) | 12–18% | 0.15 FTE per engineer | about 0.72x |
| Offshore (Asia) | 22–35% | 0.35 FTE per engineer | about 0.62x |
Where each model fits in 2027
- Onshore — Revenue-critical systems, regulated data, unclear requirements, and work that needs same-day decisions with product or compliance.
- Nearshore — Well-defined product work with a stable backlog, where 5–7 hours of overlap is enough.
- Offshore — Mature, well-documented work: maintenance, test execution, migrations with clear acceptance criteria, round-the-clock support.
- Blended — Onshore senior engineers own architecture and sensitive paths; nearshore or offshore capacity handles clearly specified implementation.
Hidden costs to budget for
- Vacancy cost — A senior seat open for 90 days means a quarter of roadmap that didn't ship. It's the most under-counted line in build-vs-hire comparisons.
- Ramp time — 8–14 weeks to full speed for a direct hire on a real codebase; 2–3 weeks for an embedded engineer joining a team with an onboarding runbook.
- Your senior staff's time — Low-overlap teams pull hours of async clarification from your best people. Price that time at their rate.
- Attrition — Replacing a senior engineer typically costs 1.5–2x salary in recruiting, ramp and lost context.
Sources and methodology
- US wages — U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, Software Developers (15-1252), May 2024: median $133,080, 90th percentile $211,450 (bls.gov/ooh).
- Partner rates — Accelerance 2026 global software outsourcing rate survey, as reported June 2026: senior Latin America $60–$75/hr, senior Asia $31–$41/hr, LatAm rates down 7.1% in 2025.
- Rework and overhead — NextGen Coding Company engagement data: rework is the share of delivered work needing material change after acceptance; overhead is client-side coordination time per engineer.
- Updates — We will revise this edition when BLS publishes new wage data or rate surveys move materially.

Heading into 2027, the onshore-to-offshore cost gap per shipped outcome is about 1.6x — not the 4-6x rate cards suggest — once rework, overlap loss and management overhead are priced in.

Common questions
How much will a senior software engineer cost in 2027?
Plan on roughly $250K–$280K a year fully loaded for a US senior engineer: a $185K–$210K base plus payroll taxes, benefits, equipment and recruiting. Senior nearshore partners bill about $60–$75/hour and offshore partners about $31–$41/hour.
Are nearshore rates going up or down for 2027?
Down slightly. Latin American partner rates fell about 7.1% in 2025, the steepest regional decline in Accelerance's survey, and senior LatAm rates now sit close to Eastern Europe.
Is offshore still cheaper than onshore in 2027?
Yes on paper, but by much less than rates suggest. After rework of 22–35% and heavier coordination, offshore lands near 0.62x the effective cost of US onshore per shipped outcome — with a much wider spread of outcomes.
What is the fully loaded cost of an in-house engineer?
About 1.35–1.45x base salary once payroll taxes, benefits, equipment, software and recruiting are included — before the cost of the seat sitting empty during a hiring cycle.
How does AI change engineering cost in 2027?
It makes code cheaper to write, so review, testing and release practices now drive cost per shipped feature. Teams with strong engineering discipline gain the most; weak teams just produce more rework faster.
