Frequently asked questions
- What is a Unix timestamp?
- The Unix timestamp (Unix time, epoch time) is the number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970. Milliseconds are the same reference multiplied by 1000. It's the standard way to represent absolute time in APIs and logs.
- Seconds or milliseconds — how do I tell?
- A 10-digit number is seconds (through the year 2286). A 13-digit number is milliseconds. This tool auto-detects based on magnitude.
- Why store timestamps in UTC?
- UTC is unambiguous, monotonic, and immune to daylight-saving-time transitions. Store timestamps in UTC (or a tz-aware type like TIMESTAMPTZ) and convert to the user's local time only for display.
- What is ISO 8601?
- The international standard for representing dates and times: YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS.sssZ. It sorts lexicographically, includes timezone information, and is the recommended format for JSON APIs.
